There are so many people that think they know how to write. There are a multitude that have written about writing tips. I have many of those books.
They all have one thing in common.
I have not finished one of them! Those authors are so dry and boring I can not follow their thought process.
Then there is the internet!
Quite a few “gurus” will teach you how to write for thousands of dollars. I don’t have that kind of money and I don’t have time for that nonsense either.
When I wrote my first draft of The Shattered Vase I had an outline. However, there was more than one time that my characters skipped right off the outline and went on their own merry way. Funny thing was when my characters did that, I wrote what they wanted me to write and threw my outline to the wind. The characters that I created in The Shattered Vase were so remarkable, that when I was writing, I became them.
That was exactly what I used to love about acting when I acted in high school and college.
Then there are those who say you MUST have a storyboard!
That is a lot of work and a lot of mess and my ADD brain cannot do nonsense like that. The wonderful thing about my brain is that I don’t have time for craziness.
So how on earth did I write The Shattered Vase?
The Shattered Vase is a novel that is close to 500 pages!
It is a compelling storyline which captivates the reader as you are lured into the depths of the spiritual realm.
The symbolism that is woven into the story makes The Shattered Vase capable of being considered a classical masterpiece.
Yet, I didn’t have an outline.
I didn’t have a storyboard.
I did not have a guru.
Whatever did I do?
I PRAYED! https://singleparents.dfwhostingwebsites.com/writing-with-god/
I prayed before I wrote, during the writing and then after I had finished a chapter.
Then I listened to God and I obeyed God.
I had written the entire novel when He told me to change the name of the main character from Rebecca to Susanna.
I am like,” Really? Are you kidding me?” (Thank God for the find and replace function!)
I knew there had to be a reason for this. So I looked up the Biblical meaning of Susanna or Suzie. The meaning of that name is “graceful lily.” Symbolically that is the perfect description for the single mother who is featured in The Shattered Vase. Only God could have known that.
Prayer is the most important advice I can give any aspiring writer in the category of writing tips.
