I have been reading through Numbers lately. Before that I read through Deuteronomy. They are both a book of rules, very specific and direct rules. Many of these rules have to do with how the tabernacle was taken care of. If the Israelis did not perform their duties in the way that God commanded, the punishment was death.
As I was reading Numbers this morning my thoughts were led to another passage of scripture I have been meditating on lately. The passage is found in 1 Corinthians 6:18-20. “Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. (19) Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, who you have from God, and you are not your own? (20) For you were bought at a price, therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
This makes so much sense to me. As I read through the old testament I was so impressed with all of the preparations that God commanded regarding his temple and the Ark of the Covenant. In the new testament we are His temple and we are not to engage in sex unless we have a covenant agreement that invites God into the midst of our love.
God does not change. His desire is for wholeness and reconciliation. We must remember that this was bought at a price and the price was the sacrifice of his beloved Son, Jesus Christ.
