The Shattered Vase

For those of you who are following my blog, this is the second excerpt from my novel, The Shattered Vase, which is soon to be released.

The Shattered Vase – 2

Suzie waited all weekend for a call. She didn’t know who he was
hunting with, or where he was hunting. What if he got hurt?
To keep her mind occupied, Suzie spent the weekend cleaning.
In the pleasant and warm day, the children wore themselves out
with outdoor adventures. They went to bed early, with no fight left
in them.
Finally, at nine o’clock on Sunday night, she heard Joe’s Ford
150 pulling into the driveway. She bristled at the sound of his new
hunting boots stomping up the front stairs. She hurried to the front
door, hoping to catch him before he trudged over the freshly vacuumed
carpet.
Suzie greeted Joe before he could step inside. “Could you please
go to the back door?”
Joe shoved her aside and stepped into the house. “Listen, I’ve
been hunting all weekend. I really don’t have the energy to walk
around the house just to please you.”
As he bent down to untie his Cabella boot strings, he flicked mud
all over the front foyer. He strode past Suzie with defiant arrogance,
leaving a trail of mud, dried grass, and brush behind him.
By the time Suzie was done cleaning up the mess, Joe was in bed.
She crawled in beside him and tried to cuddle. Joe quickly turned on
his side to block any kind of affection.
Suzie couldn’t sleep that night. She felt uncomfortable; there
was a prevailing sense of evil in the room. She tossed and turned all
night. She had just started to doze off, when Joe awoke to the alarm.
He got up and made so much noise taking a shower that Suzie
couldn’t go back to sleep. She finally sandwiched her head between
the pillows.
