The last section of the Lord’s Prayer states, “For yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen.”
So we start off with praise and we end with praise and there is just one little snippet about our needs in this prayer. Really? I mean, goodness me, I thought prayer was about communicating with God and if it is all about Him then how is He supposed to know that I need some new couches?
The undeniable fact of the matter is that God knows every thought that we think. He can fulfill each and every wish we have, even before we think we need it.
Case in point. Awhile ago I wrote about a God date I had. God and I went shopping in Winter Park, Florida. As I was walking into the town I thought, “My goodness, I am getting a bit hot.” I did not complain, nor did I pray about it, it was just merely a thought. As I kept walking through the town I noticed clouds rolling in and soon I was no longer hot. I felt so loved when God drew my attention to the clouds. My heart just kind of turned to mush.
Another unspoken prayer of mine has gotten the attention of God. I live in a city, but in Texas there is a tax break if you use the land for agriculture. When I first moved into my new house eight years ago there were some cows in a pasture close by. The cows are no longer there. We have a Walmart grocery store there now. It sickened me to see that store go up. I did not pray about it but I did miss those lovely cows.
Recently I had a lovely date with a wonderful Christian man who was a rancher. Guess who had owned those cows? Yep, he did. He said he had to transfer them to another pasture. Recently when I talked with him he said he was currently trying to get a water line hooked up so that he could put some cows in another area close by my home.
I was ecstatic. I think the most lovely sight in the world is to see cows grazing through meadows. It just brings me such a sense of peace.
So now I am praying for the land which this rancher wants to put cows on, hoping they get the water line set up so the cows can have a water trough. Before I met this rancher, I didn’t even think to pray for the cows to return to my neighborhood. It is so amusing to me that God allowed me to meet the rancher that had blessed my neighborhood with cows in the past. This goes to prove that God knows even our secret desires and things which we do not even realize are our desires.
As I read the Lord’s prayer I realized that when we pray we should be more concerned about giving Him praise and fulfilling His will than about Him meeting our needs. He knows what we need and we are to be content in our present circumstance. That doesn’t mean that we can not pray about things that we want or need but it does mean that they should not be the focus of our prayers.
Until I got this revelation regarding prayer I mostly prayed about me. After this time of meditation I realized it is more important to give praise and honor to our heavenly Father. For it is God who sacrificed his most wonderful Son, Jesus Christ. All glory be to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
