This year was an unusual Thanksgiving. I didn’t have to cook. My daughter works nights and she had to work four days straight the week of Thanksgiving and my son said he wanted to stay in Louisiana on the way back from the wedding in Florida.
Not having to cook on a holiday should have tickled my fancy. I usually cook till exhaustion on each and every holiday. I could put my feet up this Thanksgiving and watch TV, read a book or start working on my next book.
I did none of those things. What did I do? I cooked!.
This is my daughter’s first Thanksgiving with her new husband and I was not going to let it slip past without making them a turkey dinner. If I was going to make one for her, my son in Louisiana was also going to get a full dose of turkey and fixings.
I texted my son-in-law and asked him if I could bring over a huge amount of food on Thanksgiving while my daughter was sleeping? She works nights as a respiratory therapist at a hospital. He said, “Yes!”
Then I asked my son if he would mind driving to Tyler, Texas so that I could bring him some food also. He said he wouldn’t mind at all.
So on Wednesday I cooked like a Iron chef and snuck the food into my daughter’s apartment while she was sleeping. It was so much fun to arrange with my son-in-law and I love sharing food.
Then on Thursday I spent all day cleaning up the horrendous mess I had made on Wednesday and Friday I drove to Tyler to take my son out to dinner and give him a whole lot of holiday food.
When I asked my daughter how she liked the food she said she was going to take the pie to her work. I made her a turtle pumpkin pie. I asked her how her coworkers liked the pie. She said they were blown away by it.
I was so thrilled that not only did I get to share my turkey with two of my children but they will both probably share the food with others. My son indicated that he may share also.
I think the greatest thing about Thanksgiving may not only be about being grateful but also about sharing what we are grateful for.
As a result of this I am going to share with you, my audience, one of my holiday recipe’s. You really have not lived until you make and eat this fabulous pie. I hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving and best wishes for a Merry Christmas also!
It is THE TURTLE PUMPKIN PIE RECIPE.
