CATCHING THE ATTENTION

Capturing the elusive attention of your reader is of primary importance for any writer. One of the first people who bought The Shattered Vase was a man I met at a Christian Christmas Singles Celebration. He said that my book had caught his attention when I had mentioned the main character, Suzie, was wearing stilettos.

I intentionally wrote The Shattered Vase in a way which could capture the readers attention and hold it captive as they turned the pages. However, I never thought that stilettos would be the lure for such a man. Sometimes it is a shot in the dark as to what can embrace the reader. In the following excerpt you will learn how I used stilettos in my novel, The Shattered Vase.

Suzie scurried to the front door, threw on her winter coat, and opened
the door. She rushed onto the front porch. The layer of ice caught her
heels on the first step. Her stiletto heels betrayed her as her body flew
backward. She grabbed the railing on the side of the porch. The railing
waffled for a moment, shaking as if it were a leaf in the wind, then held
tight to the rusty bolts that secured it to the porch.
She caught the look on Joe’s face as she twisted and pulled herself up.
He was smirking. Damn him
