I went to see the movie, American Sniper, and I came out with mixed feelings. I am by nature a nonviolent person but when I see films like this, my competitive juices start flowing and I want the bad guys to be killed.
Then yesterday I was reading something on the internet which tore the movie apart. The article alluded to all of the inaccurate suppositions that the movie portrayed. I could understand the opinion of that writer but it still made me angry.
I don’t know if the author of that article had ever fought in a war. I don’t know if he was Republican or Democrat but I do know one thing. Soldiers need us to do one thing for them more than anything. They need us to support them.
We may not be in favor of the war or the basis for the war but they may not be either.
As I sit in my bedroom typing this blog post I realize that the Iraq war was started on a lie. That does not mean I would disrespect any of the veterans of the Iraq war because of that lie.
Those young men and women are doing their job when they go to battle. The last thing they need is for those of us who sit in safety back home to question their motives or their character.
The other day at the post office a veteran was complaining because his VA benefit letters were not making it to his house. He held up the line for quite awhile. I was in the line and another lady was in the line who said,”He has been complaining for fifteen minutes and that is why the rest of us are standing in line.”
I was glad she didn’t say it loud enough for the veteran to hear it because if I had seen him flinch I would have had to give her a piece of my mind. That young man had put his life on the line to defend my country and waiting fifteen minutes for him to complain was the least of my worries.
If you know a veteran or someone who is active in the military please support them in whatever way you can. They deserve it more than most do. They sure deserve respect more than that lady who was standing in line beside me.
