ADVICE FOR A CANCER PATIENT

When I was a home health nurse I had the privilege of visiting many patients in many different stages of disease. One of my patients was a woman who had cancer. She had already suffered the hair loss from chemotherapy and there wasn’t much I could do for her.

I told her one thing which she said made all the difference in her life. I told her to make her environment as conducive to healing as she possibly could. Have the music she preferred to play, playing at all times. If she preferred a particular scent have that scent wafting through the air. If she liked an item of clothing wear it every day.

I have a tendency to beat up on myself with my self-criticism. If my house isn’t perfectly cleaned it drives me nuts. If my clothes aren’t washed I get antsy. If the litter pans are dirty, my cats stop using them. (Yucky)

I have realized lately that I am my own worst enemy. I demand way more from myself than others.

I am trying very hard to “seek peace and pursue it” as the Holy Spirit whispered in my dreams a couple of weeks ago. It is difficult but I am hoping I can be as kind to myself as I encouraged the cancer patient to be to herself..
