As the cold winter winds slither in through the cracks in our foundations, I would like to share with you a tradition I had when I was raising my children.
I think maintaining a tradition of different events is a good way to recapture stability. Stability in a single parent home is sometimes an elusive butterfly, so to establish traditions enables some level of security for children.
One of the traditions I established was to make chili when the cold started to settle in. It was a very easy recipe and I want to share it with my readers. Especially those who are braving the cold out in the upper east coast.
Simple Chili Recipe
Brown 2 lbs of ground beef or sausage in large soup kettle or dutch oven. You can add 1 diced onion if your kids like onion and a bit of garlic if you don’t mind. Drain off fat. Break up a Owen’s chili brick and mix it in with the meat. Then add a 46 oz. can of Tomato juice and beans if you like beans. Simmer for 15-20 minutes and serve with shredded cheese.
I grew up in Nebraska, where our favorite compliment to chili was a frosted cinnamon roll. I know it sounds absurd, right? But when you try it, you will be hooked! I also usually put out some baby carrots and french bread to complete this meal.
