50 SHADES

This weekend the 50 Shades of Grey is opening. I am already about to vomit. I absolutely hate how the media picks a book at random and then puts the “author” up on an altar which we are all supposed to mindlessly worship.

I tried reading the first book. I really tried. It was so poorly written I don’t remember whether or not I finished it. I couldn’t stomach even looking at the second book but my sweet daughter read it and she said it was just as bad as the first. The only person I know who read all three books is my aunt. She said that at the end of the third book the girl finally realized that BDSM was abuse. I personally thought the girl was such a dunce that she would have never come to that conclusion.

I detest books which characterize women as being weak puppets in the world of men. This problem is not limited to E.L. James though. I have made a decision to abandon one of my favorite female authors because she has a habit of making single mom’s seem worthless. That decision was very difficult because I had read several of her books and deemed her a superb writer, which is not what I would claim for the author of the 50 shades series.

The real danger to this current craze though, is not Ms. James lack of talent as an author. The real danger is assuming that abuse is erotic. There are so many women who are abused in relationships. I have had a few relationships of that type and believe me, erotic would not be how I would describe them.

In those relationships the main character flaw was that the men had to control me. It was terrifying. They were also possessive, insecure and had a liking for alcohol which was beyond healthy. They were anything but the self assured, successful man in the 50 shades series.

I am perplexed why more feminist groups are not being more vocal in their stance on this. I am also concerned that churches are not taking a stand. There is one feminist group in Australia which has held protests and I applaud them but why are not more people vocal?

It is sickening to me that so many women are mindlessly led by the masses to an end which may lead to abuse and possibly death. Tomorrow I will explore what may have lead to the success of this series.
